A photograph of an open storybook page. It has the text 'They built tiny tipis in tall trees to throw conkers down on the big people below'. You can see a drawing of two tiny people sat on a tree branch inside a tipi made with pencils and some cloth. Underneath is another open storybook and you can see text on the page.

About A Small Tale

A Small Tale is a literacy project for primary years 1-4, led by the teacher in the classroom.

The project aims to ignite and inspire students’ passion and motivation for writing while raising standards in reading, speaking and listening.

About the Project

The teacher and their class read a mysterious old picture book about two mischievous and messy tiny people with a love of stories. But when they return to the book the following day the pages are all blank, except for two sets of tiny footprints… they discover that the tiny characters have escaped. Will the pupils be able to get them back to safety, before it’s too late?

The project takes place across seven days which can be broken up over two weeks. It can be delivered multiple times with the same set of assets and resources.

  • Raise standards in reading, speaking and listening skills
  • Inspire and develop imaginative teaching practices for literacy; placing the teacher at the centre of the creativity

  • A toolkit including handmade props and materials that brings A Small Tale to life.
  • A 60 minute instructional video
  • A day-by-day instruction manual with lesson planning ideas

This project had a big impact on reluctant writers. I had pages of writing from children who usually struggle to put pen to paper.

The children were very keen to write about where they thought the characters might be, with lots of original ideas and good quality writing.

This project was brilliant. My colleague and I were so excited about teaching the lessons and the resources that were provided were outstanding! Thank you. The props were of such a high quality, totally believable and easy to set up. It was a pleasure to teach and reminded me why I became a teacher.
