Steve McCourt
Steve is a Brent-based theatre-maker and director who creates work that ignites conversation between young audiences and their adults. Originally from a performance background, Steve graduated from the Central School of Speech and Drama in 2013.Â
As a performer and deviser, Steve has made work with some the nation’s most forward thinking and highly regarded companies (Tall Stories, Improbable, Blind Summit, The Wardrobe Ensemble) taking work to some of the world's most celebrated stages including the West End (The Lyric, The Vaudeville), Sydney Opera House, Royal Opera House, National Theatre of Holland, Bregenzer Festspiele and Spoleto Festival.
For six years (2016-2021), Steve worked with Tall Stories to offer both adapted and original work under the direction of Olivia Jacobs and Toby Mitchell. A collaboration that saw The Gruffalo explore the Deep Dark Woods of London’s West End, followed some unlikely friends (The Snail and the Whale) on their nautical adventures, made the Future Perfect for schools in North London and brought new life to Oscar Wilde’s repertoire: The Canterville Ghost and Wilde Creatures.
Alongside his performance and devising work, Steve first stepped into the directing world through his collaborations with Casey Jay Andrews - Fringe First award winning writer, storyteller, Senior Designer of Punchdrunk Enrichment and Designer of Punchdrunk’s Viola’s Room. A collaboration that spans a journey from an immersive show for 15 audience members (Every Wild Beast, 2016) to an overall Best Theatre Award at Adelaide Fringe (A Place that Belongs to Monsters, 2023).
Since 2016, Steve is proud to have acted as an Associate Artist with The Arts Centre, Hounslow — a theatre deeply embedded in the artistic and creative progression of the Hounslow community and its young artists. Acting in response to the needs of the young audiences of Hounslow, Steve created Thea Saves her Parents (an eco-warrior adventure story) and Howl (an interactive musical devised from children’s observations of their adult’s mental health).
Alongside his work in theatre, Steve has worked as an educator (from EYFS to Level 6 and above) in varying capacities. Steve is most proud of his educational work in North West London; acting as a key practitioner in creating inclusive, accessible, child-led learning structures that honour behaviour as a powerful form of communication.
Steve joined the Punchdrunk Enrichment team as Associate Director in 2023. His work includes The Creature Chronicles — the company’s first digital teacher-led adventure, The Immersive Learning Toolkit, the development and delivery of Masterclass and CPD programmes and the upcoming production — Fireside Tales.Â
